03/16/2001 Thursday's 83-15 vote in favor of the most sweeping overhaul of bankruptcy laws in 20 years occurred just two weeks after the House passed a similar bill, but one that left wealthy homeowners in some states protected.

The measure garnered the votes of 47 Republicans and 36 Democrats in the evenly divided Senate, while 13 Democrats and two Republicans opposed it.

03/13/2001 Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) said the Senate would debate bills to overhaul bankruptcy and campaign finance laws and then tackle the budget before taking up Bush's education proposals, which call for annual student testing and federal funding tied to educational results.
03/08/2001  Senators voted, 65-34, to reject the exemption for medical debts from the bankruptcy overhaul legislation, which overwhelmingly passed the House last Thursday and is expected to be signed by President Bush  if it reaches his desk.
03/04/2001 BANKRUPTCY OVERHAUL (House Vote: For: 306 / Against: 108)

The House passed a bill (HR 333) on Thursday making it more difficult for individuals to use bankruptcy to walk away from debt. Under the bill, most debtors making more than the median income for their region are required to file under Chapter 13 of the bankruptcy code, which entails substantial repayment of unsecured debt over five years, rather than Chapter 7, which requires little or no repayment. The bill also changes certain bankruptcy rules for farms and businesses.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Consumers and businesses amassed so much debt in recent years that record numbers filed for bankruptcy protection for the second year in a row, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts said Wednesday, August 14, 2002.
The 1.5 million new cases filed during the year ending June 30 represented an 8.6 percent increase over the record number of cases filed during the year ending June 30, 2001.  "They're telling us what happened last year. It's just the recession," said Michael Evans, a Florida economist formerly with American Economics Group.
